The #1 Bear was announced during the December 12 & 13, 1998 Ty sales conference that was held at the Fairmount Hotel in Chicago for Ty sales representatives. The meeting was to review the coming years sales strategies and policies.

Each representative that attended received a #1 Bear in appreciation of selling billions of dollars during 1998. Along with their special Bears each rep received Ty® buttons, Ty pens, Ty planning calendar, Ty mouse pad, Coffee mug, Ty Polo shirt, Encyclo-beanie-a CD-ROM, The Collector’s Pocket Planner for Ty Beanie Babies, Collector’s Value Guide for Ty Beanie Babies, Collector’s Value Guide for Ty Plush Animals, and a My Beanie Baby binder.

Only 253 #1 Bears were created, each signed in red ink by Ty Warner making this the most wanted Beanie Baby!

Warning there are known counterfeits of this Beanie on the Market! Use the following tips when shopping for this Beanie Baby.

Computer & Internet Security •Some details to look for when shopping for a #1 Bear. Never buy a #1 Bear that has not been authenticated by a reliable authentication service.
•There have been several different versions of counterfeit #1 Bears. If the inside left of the hang tag only has 6 lines of text including the main head line The Beanie Babies Collection, it is counterfeit. Authentic bears have 10 lines of text on the inside left including the main head line.
•The inside right of the tag should be have a number hand written inside of it followed by a printed number marking the total number of #1 Bears. Should be hand written number of 253.
•Some counterfeit tags have the completely wrong information written on the back of the hang tag as well. The back of the tag should mention the Employee Party held at the Fairmont Hotel, December 11-14, 1998

•TUSH TAGS: The tush tag should have the name of the beanie written on one line as #1 Bear followed by the TM trademark sign. Some counterfeits have it written on two lines, #1 followed on the next line by Bear.
The registration symbol should following the word Collection not Babies as some of the counterfeits do.
•A #1 Bear should also not have a hologram tush tag!
